Skills and Requirements

How demanding is the St. James Folk Choir?

Our requirements are very simple. We are seeking members who

  * enjoy singing or playing liturgical music as part of a group

  * are willing to put in a small amount of rehearsal time (about 1 hour most weeks)

There is no specific required level of skill for entry into the St. James Folk Choir.  We will work with you to develop the skills you need.

Of course, the core of our group is singers.  Although we often sing harmonies and countermelodies, we are not organized in formal voice sections.  Instead, we flexibly assign roles that best fit each member's skills and wishes.

Our usual complement of musical instruments is built around acoustic guitars and an electric bass, with many members both singing and playing.  On a given Sunday, we may also have an electronic keyboard, a violin/viola and/or a flute.  Unfortunately, the style of the group and the conditions under which we play will not usually accommodate drum kits, electric guitars, brass instruments or most reed instruments.

Since our group focus is on accompaniment for congregational singing, we rarely use soloists, either vocal or instrumental.
